Desaturated Dark Angels Power Armour

I like my Dark Angels to be DARK, the way they were when I first started. However I’m also a fan of very stark minimal highlights. Here’s how I achieve this. In this recipe I use the following paints: Black Primer (AK Interactive) Caliban Green (Citadel) Loren Forest (Citadel) Warboss Green (Citadel) Coelia Greenshade (Citadel)

Undercoat the mini in black, this can be brushed, sprayed, airbrushed, however you prefer.

Paint the armour in caliban green, try to get full coverage, but don’t worry if you miss bits. The black will help with more natural shading.

Take a moment to look over the model and think about how it would be lit in a sparsely lit environment. We’re going 80s comic book style here. Lots of dark colours with very minimal highlights. Pay attention to places like the top of knees, the tops of shoulder pads or helmets, we want to be -very- deliberate how we’re doing this, highlights should be minimal and sparse. Lightly dry brush the selected raised parts of the armour with loren forest.

Wash all over with coelia greenshade, this may need some thinning. The aim here is to tie the two greens together more but to also filter them and pull them back more in terms of saturation.

Repeat the dry brush stage, over the same spots but with less coverage, focusing more over the very top of where you previously applied the loren forest.

A second all over wash of coelia greenshade.

Finally pick out the very tips of the highlighted parts of the armour and add very fine point highlights with Loren forest, we want to be minimalist and deliberate in the approach here.

Bonus 8th stage. If you want to push the contrast a bit more, hit the very tips of your last highlight - fine lining or just small dots, with warboss green to really push the contrast.
